New Display Item~The Pelikan 1000 is a magnificently designed and constructed fountain pen. Clearly oversize, it is streamlined so that it never feels bulky. The capped pen is long but not awkward, solid but not oppressively heavy. its weight is evenly distributed along its length, resulting in a genuinely comfortable fountain pen that happens to be a giant.

Like many oversize pens, the 1000 fits the hand well. Fingers need not close into a pinched fist to hold this instrument. There is no accompanying weight factor; the 1000 is lighter than some smaller pens. The 1000 is a comfortable and easy pen to hold.

This pen's details are as appealing as its feel. The striped barrel, a Pelikan tradition for nearly 75 years, is offered in green or blue with a black cap. The 1000 is also available in all black.

The barrel has thin transparent windows that run its length, excluding the nib section and piston grip. This allow the user to watch the piston extend and retreat and to monitor the ink level. The effect is created by a two-layer barrel - a clear inner tube is overlaid on a tube of alternating clear and coloured striations.

At the barrel's filling end is the piston grip. Very slightly tapered, it ends in a low dome. Turning the piston grip counter clockwise expels its air pocket. When the turning stops, the piston has been fully extended. Turning clockwise draws ink into the chamber. When the grip has closed back into the barrel, the pen is filled and ready to write.


The piston grip is separated from the barrel by a pair of thin gold plated rings complemented by a thin band of black from the grip itself. At the top of the barrel is the black plastic nib section. It begins with deeply cut threads that snugly hold the corresponding cap threads when the pen is closed. Very slightly scalloped, the section flares to a gold band at its end. the section, like the barrel, has substantial girth, allowing for a comfortable grip.
